Democracy in Europe is undergoing a dynamic transformation as nations and organizations work together to address challenges and reinforce democratic values. From research initiatives to grassroots movements, the european continent is actively shaping its democratic future. The European Commission (EC), for instance, is leading research under Horizon Europe to tackle pressing issues such as electoral integrity, countering extremism, misinformation, disinformation and ensuring the safety of minorities and women in political spaces. These efforts aim to create robust policies that safeguard democratic institutions and promote inclusivity. IDEAL project aims to support the work of EC by bridging cultures, languages and shaping inclusive democracies.

Public engagement has also played a pivotal role in defending democracy. Pro-democracy movements in countries like Hungary, Serbia, and Turkey have demonstrated the resilience of democratic ideals, with citizens rallying against authoritarian trends and political cronyism. These large-scale demonstrations highlight the power of collective action in preserving democratic freedoms and holding governments accountable.

To further protect democratic institutions, initiatives like the European Democracy Action Plan and the Defence of Democracy package have been launched and promoted by the EC. These programs focus on ensuring free elections, combating disinformation, and enhancing transparency in political advertising. By addressing these critical areas, Europe is taking proactive steps to fortify its democratic systems and uphold the principles of fairness and justice.

On Sunday, the 4th of May, Romania will hold its first round of presidential elections, a pivotal moment for the nation's democratic process. It is essential that voters are well-informed about the candidates, their policies, and their visions for the future, enabling them to make thoughtful and informed decisions at the ballot box. Access to unbiased, transparent, and honest profiles of each candidate is not just important—it is fundamental to ensuring a fair and equitable election process.

Particular attention must be given to supporting vulnerable and marginalized groups, who often face barriers to participating fully in democratic processes. These groups should be empowered to express their opinions freely, without fear of discrimination or exclusion, regardless of their cultural, social, or economic backgrounds. Providing resources, outreach, and assistance to these communities is vital to fostering an inclusive electoral environment where every voice is heard and valued.

Ultimately, the success of these elections depends on the collective effort to uphold democratic principles, promote transparency, and ensure that all citizens, regardless of their circumstances, have the opportunity to contribute to shaping the future of their country. By prioritizing inclusivity and informed decision-making, Romania can take a significant step toward strengthening its democracy and building a more equitable society.
